From fun in the sun to athletic indulgence with the Ironman race held in May each year Lanzarote is a place of wonder and excitement. If you like relaxing on a beach, sipping cocktails by the pool or exploring a fascinating and unique landscape then there is no better place to go. This is what makes Lanzarote so popular with tourists and second home owners alike. Lanzarote is an unusual combination of beauty and baron, as you drive from one end to another you will see volcanos, an ancient forest, beaches and open spaces like a lunar landscape.

Located just off the west coast of Africa and a non stop flight from most major European airports Lanzarote has become a popular destination for summer and winter visitors. Along with its neighbouring Canary Islands it receives more sun than any other destination in Spain and is ideal for escaping from the rigours of a northern European winter.

From the rural reaches of north Lanzarote to the tourist town of Playa Blanca in the south, the island has been styled to please every visitors eye.

If the beach is not enough for you there are many places of interest to visit and with each season of the year different activities on land and sea. With low cost links by sea and air to neighbouring Islands Lanzarote is an excellent place to start your exploration too. Here are some of the popular attractions regularly visited by some of our home owners:

Timanfaya Park

An incredible landscape leading to the top of the Timanfaya Volcano with eerie red and black overtones. You would be forgiven for thinking you have just landed on Mars. Once at the top take a tour bus around the volcano and see plant and vegetation unique to Lanzarote. End the tour with a demonstration of the heat just below the surface with fire and steam blasting like a rocket.

Jameos Del Aqua

A complex of natural caves and gardens by Lanzarote's own Cesar Manrique. An underground salt water lagoon home to the blind albino white crabs found nowhere else. An auditorium setup in the caves for up to 600 people provides excellent acoustics. Regular concerts featuring local music and spectacular visual displays make this a must see excursion for all the family.

Cueva de los Verdes or Green Caves

Two km of underground caves formed by the eruption of Monte Corona 3000 years ago. These fascinating caves were used by the Guanches to avoid the torment of Pirates. Some of the tunnels go under the sea and are said to be the longest known volcanic in the world. The lowest part of the cave is also used for a concert hall.

Playa Blanca

Situated on the south coast of Lanzarote, Playa Blanca is close to many attractions including glorious local beaches, Timanfaya National Park and the semi-submerged volcano of El Golfo

El Golfo

El Golfo is a semi-circular Volcanic Crater (half of it has been eroded by the sea) filled with Sea-water that has filtered through the black sand that separates the lagoon from the sea.

The Green Lagoon “El charco de los Ciclos” also known as “Laguna verde”(the colour is caused by algae living in the water) contrasting with a black sand beach and wierd looking rock formations make for quite a spectacular site.

The nearby village of the same name is worth checking out for its restaurants. A fine and refreshing Atlantic breeze often meanders along the village where some of the finest restaurants in Lanzarote can be found.

Los Hervideros

On the way to El Golfo from the south of the Island you will pass Los Hervideros which literally translated means “Boiling Waters”. Spectacular sea breaks against the volcanic rock produces and interesting display of sea and salt. An interesting path way that leads to a natural balcony allows visitors to get close to the breaking sea. It is no coincidence nearby you will find Las Salinas del Janubio the famous salt flats that produce Lanzarote salt.

The Cactus Garden

Another example of Cesar Manrique's work El Jardin del Cactus is established in the heart of the Island. With an impressive collection of over 1000 species of Cacti.

Castillo de San Gabriel

A 16th century fortress overlooking Arrecife harbour built to protect against marauding pirates. Despite it's purpose it was overthrown by Algerian Pirate Morato Arraez in 1586. After being rebuilt in 1599 it was used by the military right up to the 1950's at which time this picturesque fort was converted to a Museum.

Mirador del Rio

Incomparable views across the north side of Lanzarote the Island of La Graciosa, part of the Chinijo Archipelago, can be seen from the high position of Mirador del Rio. A restaurant and tourist centre created by Cesar Manrique combined with spectacular views make this an enjoyable day out.
